Modernising a legacy EdTech compliance platform into a high-performance B2B product

I led the strategic evolution of Jedu - a compliance platform for schools and Multi-Academy Trusts. Inheriting a partially-built legacy system, I drove the full design transformation: overhauling the IA, building a design system, and shipping specialised tooling that made complex compliance workflows genuinely usable.

A legacy system, mid-build, under pressure

Jedu needed to handle dense compliance data for education boards - audits, questionnaires, school-wide reporting - while remaining usable by non-technical staff. The platform had been partially built when we took it on, which meant the challenge wasn't just design: it was threading a new design language through existing code without breaking what already worked.

Business Goals

Gain a competitive edge in the school compliance market, improve product delivery speed, and modernise the UI to reflect Judicium's recent rebrand.

Strategic Input

Led the transition from the inherited build to a new vision - defining which UX changes were safe to ship and which needed to be deferred to protect the legacy codebase. That triage was as much a product strategy decision as a design one.

Iterative, technically-grounded, role-aware

Working closely with Totally's development team, I drove the design from workshops through to final UI. The process was deliberately iterative - staged releases, tested with senior leadership and existing users at each step - to validate changes without destabilising the live product.

My Role

Lead UX/UI designer end-to-end - strategy, workshops, wireframes, IA, and final UI. Maintained a constant feedback loop with developers to keep design decisions technically viable throughout.

Information architecture

Restructured the hierarchy around "simplified data" - the core principle that users navigating audits or questionnaires shouldn't have to hold the platform's complexity in their head. Clarity over feature surface.

Results

15% Increase in workflow efficiency - modal-based data entry and intuitive flows cut time on core compliance tasks

Improved audit reporting speed and accuracy through the form builder and PDF export. Jedu strengthened its position as market leader for school data protection.

The constraint of working with legacy code made the strategy more interesting, not less. Knowing what not to change - and why - was as important as the design decisions themselves.

What we built

A role-based compliance workspace built for speed - where the right information surfaces for the right user, and every interaction is designed to minimise the time spent on administrative overhead.

Custom form builder

Designed a form builder that lets education boards create actionable audits, exported directly as professional PDFs for schools.

Multi-stage questionnaires

A streamlined onboarding questionnaire for end-users to complete before assessors arrive on-site, cutting pre-assessment friction.

Modal-based data entry

Implemented a design token system where table data opens into a modal - users can edit and return to their exact position in a large dataset without losing context.

Progress-driven dashboards

Replaced donut charts with progress bars to reclaim screen real estate for the data tables that sit at the core of every section dashboard.

Role-based views

Personalised welcome boards so users only see the compliance tasks and metrics relevant to their role - reducing noise and improving task focus.
